La Rochelle

Just 25 minutes away by car aross the lovely Charente Maritime countryside is the beautiful ancient port of LaRochelle, an absolute must to see when in this region of France.   Originally a British stronghold the famous two towers at the entrance to the port were supposedly built by the British a few hundred years ago. 

 

 During the summer months, during the day and evenings, stroll amongst the many stalls of arts and crafts, have your picture drawn, listen to the music or just enjoy watching the world go by.  

 

The dozens of street cafes and restaurants around the port have a huge variety of cuisines from Oriental to Arabic and of course French.

 

Go through the stone gateway and your into the old city with cool covered stone walkways and galleried shops.  Here visit the stunning Hotel De Ville with its ornate facade and carvings.

 

There are many Museums and galleries to visit not forgetting one of the largest aquariums in Europe home to a huge variey of marine life including turtles.
